In 1731, during the invasion of Odisha by Taqi Khan, the sacred deities of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra were secretly moved from the Jagannath Temple in Puri to various safe locations around Chilika Lake. According to historical traditions and references preserved through the Madala Panji, Kankanashikhari became one of the sacred refuge sites where the deities stayed before continuing their journey to other secure locations.
The surrounding waters of Chilika were not merely geographical features—they became pathways of protection, devotion, and survival.
