Kankanashikhari: From Neglect to Heritage Revival

History of Kankanashikhari

Lilakhetra of Mahaprabhu Shree Jagannatha

Kankanashikhari, situated in the Chilika region of Odisha, is traditionally revered as a sacred refuge of Mahaprabhu Shree Jagannatha.

According to historical accounts and local tradition, during the invasion of Odisha by Mughal Subedar Muhammad Taqi Khan in 1731, the Chaturdha Murti—Lord Jagannatha, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Sudarshana— were moved from Puri to places of safety. Kankanashikhari is traditionally identified as one such place of refuge.

Local tradition holds that the deities remained here for four months and sixteen days, while the Sevayats continued the sacred rituals under difficult circumstances. Kankada Phala (spine gourd) is traditionally associated with the Bhoga offered to Mahaprabhu during this period.

Today, Kankanashikhari stands as a living symbol of Jagannatha heritage, devotion and Odisha’s enduring spiritual tradition.

Kankanashikhari Revival – Reviving a Forgotten Chapter of Jagannath Heritage

Nestled amidst the tranquil backwaters of Chilika Lake near Nairi village in Odisha, Kankanashikhari is far more than a scenic destination.

It is a sacred heritage landscape where history, spirituality, nature, and the timeless traditions of Lord Jagannath converge. For centuries, this remarkable site remained known only to local devotees and a handful of researchers. Today, through sustained conservation, historical documentation, and public awareness, Kankanashikhari is once again emerging as one of Odisha’s most significant heritage destinations.

The history of Kankanashikhari is deeply connected with one of the most challenging periods in the history of the Jagannath tradition. During the invasion of Odisha by Taqi Khan in 1731, the sacred deities of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra were moved from the Shree Jagannath Temple at Puri to several secure locations around Chilika Lake for their protection. Historical records and the Madala Panji tradition identify Kankana Shikhari as one of these important refuge sites where the deities stayed before continuing their journey to other safe locations
