The 12th annual Jala Ratha Yatra was successfully celebrated at the historic island sanctuary of Kankanashikhari on Chilika Lake in July 2026. Thousands of devotees from across Odisha joined the sacred water chariot procession, carrying the representations of Lord Jagannatha, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra on beautifully decorated boats across the serene waters of the lake.
Extensive Multi-Institutional Coordination
This year’s celebrations required an unprecedented level of coordination between multiple administrative, environmental, and community stakeholders. Preparatory meetings were chaired by senior state-level officials, bringing together:
- Block Administration, Banpur
- District Administration, Khurda
- Chilika Wildlife Division
- Chilika Development Authority
- Inland Water Transport Department
- Odisha Police (Superintendent of Police, Khurda)
- Sub-Collector, Khurda
- Principals of nearby colleges
- Student volunteers and NCC units
Safety and Environmental Protocols
Particular attention was paid to safety arrangements for devotees travelling by water. The Inland Water Transport Department provided certified vessels while the Chilika Wildlife Division ensured that the procession route minimised any disruption to the lake’s sensitive ecosystem, including the Irrawaddy dolphin habitat.

The Jala Ratha Yatra is not merely a festival. It is the annual renewal of a historical connection between the Puri Jagannatha tradition and this island sanctuary, which served as a secret refuge for the sacred idols during periods of invasion and crisis.
